Hand embroidery is an ancient craf passed down from generation to generation, and skilled artisans migrate from various parts of India to bigger cities for work. However, today this ancient craft of India faces modern challenges - with education, awareness, and exposure to technology, the younger generation is exploring new possibilities that offer a better livelihood and corporate incentives. Except for a few socially compliant companies like Milaaya, that employ skilled artisans, most of these artisans are exploited in sweatshops. As digital embroidery evolves, most fashion labels are shifting their interests, restricting the number of possibilities of traditional embroidery. The goal of Milaaya Embroideries Art Foundation is to sustain this craft. Milaaya Art Foundation aims to elevate the skills of these artisans by training them in distinctive couture embroidery. These skills can then be used in the world of art which can open a whole new space for them to grow as well introduce a new medium in the art world. These highly trained artisans will be rewarded with better reimbursement, better work-place environment, and corporate benefits. The foundation will be then able to offer housing to these artisans, eliminating their living woes in big cities. More factories can be opened in or near their hometowns, encouraging artisans to live in better conditions close to their families. These small initiatives in the right direction can help protect this diminishing trade, and they cannot be limited to certain artisans, but benefit the entire community, which is why Milaaya Art Foundation is inclusive and welcomes other organizations to be a part of this program.
